How We Install an Off-Grid System: From First Call to Handover

One of the things we hear a lot from new customers is that they weren't sure what to expect when they reached out to us. The process of getting an off-grid system installed can feel overwhelming from the outside — especially if you're new to this. So here's exactly what happens when you book with ASTT.
Step 1: The initial conversation
Everything starts with a conversation. You can call us, email, or fill in our enquiry form. We'll ask about your vehicle, how you use it, what you want to run off-grid, and roughly how long you stay away. There's no pressure and no obligation — we just want to understand your situation properly before recommending anything.
If one of our packages is a good fit, we'll talk you through which one and why. If something more bespoke makes more sense, we'll discuss that route instead.
Step 2: Booking and planning
Once you're happy to proceed, we book your vehicle in and start the detailed planning. For package installs, this is largely pre-defined — we know exactly what goes where. For bespoke systems, we'll work through the full spec with you and confirm every component before ordering.
Lead times vary depending on workload, but we'll always give you a realistic timeline upfront. Our Weekender can often be turned around in two weeks. Larger bespoke builds take longer.
Step 3: The installation
When your vehicle arrives, our engineers get to work. All our installs are done in-house at our Barnoldswick workshop. We work methodically — mounting, cabling, connecting, configuring — and we don't rush. A quality electrical installation is one where everything is routed neatly, labelled clearly, and fused correctly. That's what ours look like.
For most package installs, the vehicle is with us for 3–5 days. Larger builds may take longer.
Step 4: Testing and commissioning
Before your vehicle leaves the workshop, we run through the full system. Solar charging, DC-DC charging, inverter operation, monitoring — everything is tested and confirmed working. Any settings that need configuring are set up correctly for your specific battery type and usage pattern.
Step 5: The handover
This is the bit we take seriously. When you collect your vehicle, we walk you through your new system in person. We show you how to monitor it, how to understand what the display is telling you, how each charging source works, and what to do if something seems off. The goal is that you drive away with complete confidence, not just a vehicle with new kit in it.
Step 6: Aftercare
Our support doesn't stop at handover. If you have questions in the weeks and months after installation, we're here. Call us, email us, or bring the vehicle back in. We want your system to keep working well for years — that's how we've earned the reputation we have.
