Van Conversion vs Factory Motorhome: Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we get from people just starting their motorhome journey is whether to go for a factory-built motorhome or a van conversion. Both have genuine advantages. The right answer depends entirely on how you plan to use it.

Factory motorhomes: the case for

A factory motorhome gives you a proven, tested layout built to a standard. Everything is designed to work together — gas, electrics, water, heating. The habitation area is purpose-built with insulation, proper wiring, fixed furniture and a layout optimised for living in.

Buying a quality used motorhome in the sub-£30k range gives you a lot of van for the money — something a self-build at the same price would struggle to match in terms of fit and finish. And if something goes wrong, parts and expertise are widely available.

The downsides are weight, fuel costs, and the fact that you're working within someone else's layout decisions. Personalising a factory motorhome is possible but limited.

Van conversions: the case for

A van conversion is built exactly how you want it. Every cupboard, every socket, every bit of storage is in the right place for you. The build quality of a well-done conversion rivals any factory vehicle — and in some areas (electrical systems in particular) can far exceed it.

Smaller vans are easier to drive and park in everyday situations, cheaper to run, and often more versatile. A converted Transit or Sprinter fits in a standard car park. Most factory motorhomes don't.

The downsides are time, cost if you're paying a professional to build it, and the fact that a bad conversion can be genuinely dangerous. Insulation, gas and electrical work all need to be done properly.

The off-grid angle

From a power system perspective, we work with both equally. Van conversions often give us more flexibility on battery placement and wiring routes. Factory motorhomes have existing systems we integrate into and upgrade. Neither is inherently easier — both need the same quality of installation to perform well.

If you're planning a conversion and want to think through the electrical spec, or if you have a factory motorhome and want to upgrade its power system, get in touch — we're happy to talk through either.
