What Is a Habitation Service and Does Your Motorhome Actually Need One?
A habitation service is one of those things that often gets pushed down the list — especially if everything seems to be working fine. But it's one of the most important things you can do for your motorhome, and skipping it regularly is a risk that's simply not worth taking.
Here's what's actually involved and why it matters.
What a habitation service covers
Unlike a standard vehicle service which focuses on the engine and drivetrain, a habitation service covers the living systems inside your motorhome. A proper inspection should check:
- Gas installation and appliances — leak testing, pressure testing, and checking that all gas-powered equipment is operating safely
- 230V mains electrical system — checking wiring, consumer unit, RCD protection and socket safety
- 12V electrical system — batteries, charging, fusing and distribution
- Damp — a full damp meter inspection across all panels, walls, floor and ceiling
- Fire safety equipment — smoke alarms, CO detectors, fire extinguishers
- Water system — pump, pipes, and connections
- Windows, doors and seals — condition and security
- Ventilation — habitation vents and roof fans
At ASTT our habitation service is a 52-point inspection covering all of the above.
How often should you have one?
Once per year is the standard recommendation — and for good reason. Gas and electrical systems degrade over time, seals fail, and damp can develop quickly in the UK climate. An annual check catches small issues before they become expensive problems.
You should also book a service if you've recently bought a used motorhome (regardless of age), if the vehicle has been in storage for an extended period, or if you're planning a long trip and want peace of mind before you go.
What happens if you skip it?
In the short term, probably nothing obvious. But gas leaks, electrical faults and damp damage all develop silently. By the time you notice a problem it can already be costly — or in the case of gas or electrical faults, dangerous.
Some insurance policies also require evidence of regular servicing. It's worth checking your policy wording.
